REVERSING PARALYSIS:
ONE STEP AT A TIME
The First Steps
Gregiore Courtine and his team at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne have been working a project that will change the world. For the past fifteen years Courtine has experimented on monkeys, rats and other small animals by cutting their spinal cord and disabling their ability to walk. His team then puts tiny electrical implants into their spines to stimulate nerve fibers below the site of their spinal cord injuries. Within months the animals would begin to walk again.
Breaking Into a Jog
The first person to get the spinal implant is a man who suffered a spinal cord injury five years ago that left him partially paralyzed. Before the implant, he was able to walk with support, but the stimulating implant drastically improved his gait. His team is also currently working on a brain implant that has drastically increased the coordination in monkeys, however he has not gotten permission to use both the spinal and brain implant.
